Before You Write: How to Make Your Message Useful

A clear, well-prepared message helps this office respond thoughtfully and makes the most of everyone's time. Whether you are a congregation, a university group, an interfaith council or a journalist, a few details at the outset make a real difference.

For speaking and community events

Please describe the audience you expect, the setting (a house of worship, campus, civic hall or online gathering), and the theme you hope to explore. Events that bring Muslims, Christians and Jews into the same room for honest, courteous conversation are especially welcome. Mention any preferred dates as possibilities rather than commitments, and note whether you envision a lecture, a panel or a moderated question-and-answer format. For media and the public record

Reporters, editors and producers should state their outlet, deadline and the specific questions they wish to raise. If your enquiry concerns something already published or broadcast, include the title and a short description of the passage in question so it can be addressed precisely. For personal and dialogue questions

Many people write with sincere questions about faith, family or neighbours of another tradition. These letters are read with care. Please keep in mind that this desk offers perspective and conversation, not legal, medical or counselling services; for personal matters of that kind, a qualified professional or your own faith leader is the right first step.

A note on tone

Disagreement is welcome; disrespect is not. Messages that mock any religion, target individuals or promote hostility will not receive a reply. Correspondence written in good faith, even when it challenges views expressed here, will be met in the same spirit of respect that this site extends to every person's freedom of conscience.
